    Regardless of how we feel about about vaccines, COVID-19 and new variants, they may affect some of the events that are happening now.  Keep in mind, these are events that you've solidified within the past year and the events you are applying to now are for the future, will be different.  Here's a few tips to keep you focused if some of your events are being canceled.  

    There are events being planned everyday.  We saw no slow down during 2020 of call for speakers and event planners started doing more hybrid (virtual and in person) events to help alleviate the stress some attendees may have had with attending in person events, Hybrid is here to stay, so be prepared to do a virtual speech in addition to the ones you do on stage.  Your worst move is to stop marketing yourself, you need to do this consistently.

    Vaccine Cards.  We are seeing a slow spike in events asking for vaccine certificates for speakers, attendees and exhibitors.  Obviously, this is a personal choice, so do as you see fit for you.  If you feel compelled, you can refrain from speaking at the shows that are requiring this or just offer a virtual option for speaking and training to private companies or colleges that ask for this. Most companies like the virtual option as its less expensive as they are not funding your travel expenses.  Its always good to have other options available regardless.

    Travel plans.  Most of us like to make our travel arrangements early to save money, its better to wait 4 or 3 weeks prior, just in case something happens in the city you are flying to, new travel restrictions, etc.  This way you are not tying up your funds unnecessarily if the event is canceled or postponed.

    The meeting planning industry can be frustrating to navigate as a  Speaker.  Dates are changed, educational lineup is altered, etc., which makes the process of following much more crucial in this industry.  As a Speaker, the responsibility of follow up lies in our hands.  I've compiled a few tips to help you stay organized during the journey:

    1.  Keep a journal.   For our clients, we have a special speakers journal that details every call a meeting planner.  This way, everything is in the same place, dates of calls, what transpired, what needs to happen with follow up and it can easily be put on the schedule for the next follow up interaction.

    2.  Write detailed notes.  So many speakers make the mistake of thinking they will remember everything.  Make sure you jot down all the notes you can, this is going to help you with follow up, especially if that has to occur 3 months later.  

    3.  Have a list of follow up activities.  Make a list of tasks you can do as light touches with your prospects.  Some can include, sending connection requests on social media, sending a thank you note in the mail, sending a podcast or interview that you have recently completed, making a beneficial introduction, sending an article of interest or industry related.  

    You will find that doing these tasks will keep your pipeline filled, it will also keep your name in front of the meeting planner in a positive way.
